“It might be difficult to wrap your head around this fact but for the past three decades the packaging of the three big action sports that are so inherently “west coast” skate/surf/snow have been masterminded by a low-key fellow from downtown Manhattan. For 30 years NYC skateboard pioneer, Bruno Musso, has had his hands in nearly every aspect of extreme youth culture dating back to when he defined cool by establishing New York’s first skateboard brand, Shut Skateboards, which eventually evolved into the global phenomenon that is Zoo York. Since then he’s helped make Tony Hawk a household name as a producer and director of Tony Hawk’s Gigantic Skatepark Tour, Boomboom Huck Jam and Secret Skatepark tour at the turn of the century, he rebranded Red Bull’s skateboard program with his Seek & Destroy and Manny Mania contest series. Musso’s reimagining of how a live surf contest should be presented with his work on events such as the US Open of Surfing, Nike 6.0 lowers Pro, O’Neill Coldwater Classic, Oakley Bali Pro Indonesia and Hurley Pro have since become industry standards and as part of the production team in the 2004 snowboard documentary First Decent, with its 110 theater release inspired action sports filmmakers the world over to think beyond the archaic DVD format.
‘Tastemaker’ is a term loosely thrown around these days but it falls way short of Bruno Musso’s contributions to society. Musso is a culture sculptor and his behind the scenes work has nurtured action sports and youth culture from its infancy to the mature global stage that it so proudly stands on today.”
